The Isla de los Alcatraces was named by the Spanish explorer Manuel de Ayala, and translates to mean the "Island of Pelicans." Alcatraz has been used as a Civil War fort, a Federal prison, a symbol of Native American plight, and is now a tourist destination.
Many of the buildings that originally stood on the island are no longer there. Some prison building burned during the 1960s' American Indian Alcatraz occupation.
